Katy Perry at Glastonbury!
By Katy Perry - February 19, 2018

The lights are killed, complete silence ensues. The audience
begins soft mutterings. What was happening, did the stage malfunction? Who was
coming up? A single guitar riff was enough to answer their question. It sped up
gradually, employing a somewhat familiar sound. A couple devoted fans spotted
the chord progression for Katy’s latest single “Disco Fling,” while it took the
rest of the audience a little while. However, everybody knew what they were in
for when the stage exploded in dancing pinks, purples, drums and thumping bass.
Amidst a pink cloud of smoke, a large disco ball was unveiled. As the intro
grew louder, the ball began to open slowly revealing a petite figure.
“GLASTONBURY, ARE WE READY TO PARTY?” Katy shouted at the top of her voice,
earning a grand round of applause. She dived straight into the song, dancing
alongside her back-up dancers. Her metallic dress glittered like a disco ball.
The chorus was a profusion of colours, dance and finally, some audience
reciprocation. Even if you didn’t know the song, it was easy to get the hang of
it. As the song reached the bridge, the pounding drums and bass receded to
reveal Katy’s raw voice and heavy keys. “Why do I feel this way, about a
stranger?” she coos into the microphone, before all the instrumentals roll out
into the final chorus. Disco Fling got even some hesitant people dancing, which
was Katy’s ultimate goal.

The drums kept rolling even though the single was fading
out, and eventually they took on a new pace, paving the way for Katy’s hit
“Chained To The Rhythm.” Disco ball motifs appeared behind Katy, as her dancers
made their way to the stage. “Turn it up!” She yelled into the microphone,
causing the crowd to erupt in cheers and the disco synths to cascade. She even
attempted a little bit of choreography herself during the chorus. Disco Flings
presence was felt in the neon lights, Katy’s costume and the energised feel of
the song. Certainly, Katy served a disco delight! The following song “Sail”
continues Katy’s disco delight. Powerful, siren like synths drew the audience in.
Katy sang in front of a back drop depicting waves gliding and crashing in techicolour.
The chorus, a complete synth-pop blast saw the return of katy’s dancers,
dressed in shiny full body suits. They imitate waves behind katy, before fully
surrounding her and lifting her up. “ARE WE HAVING FUN GLATSO?” She shouted. By
the time the final chorus arrived, everyone was singing at the top of their lungs.
“Sail away with me Glatso,” she cooed in the outro.

“You might recognise this one”, she teased before picking up
a bottle of water and taking a sip. “But before we go anywhere, I would like to
thank everyone for being here for me today and I hope that everyone is having
fun. We’re starting a new journey, and I am so glad that you are part of it.” A
familiar string arrangement started, and everyone knew it was time for
firework. This time, the song got an 80’s like remix with a dazzling bassline
and synthesizers. Katy asked her audience to take their phones out and turn on
their flashes. Soon she was standing in front of a sea of light. As the stage
began to die down, the audience assumed that the performance was ending. Katy made
her way to the centre of the stage and thanked her audience again. “I am so grateful
to have gotten this opportunity to perform for you, the Brits are truly a great
crowd.” She smirked, earning an affirmative applause. “However, we aren’t
finished yet. I’m performing one more song, a little teaser for the upcoming
album. It’s called ‘Can’t Read You’ and will be available to purchase and
stream right after this performance!” The performance began slowly with Katy’s
voice and piano. The stage lost its colour, and white light shone on the pop
star. She reached out to her fans, almost singing directly to them. Soft drums entered
the song, before dying out again into the prechorus. The audience was in for a
shock when the beat dropped during the chorus. “I can’t read you, I don’t need
you,” blared from the speakers. Technicolour lights made a reappearance, causing
Katy’s dress to light up like a disco ball. Despite being very boppy, the song
still held the poise of a ballad. An ode to the lack of communication between
lovers. The final chorus was greatly interrupted by Katy’s shouts of thanks,
but at this stage, the audience was singing back to her. “If you liked my songs
today, please make sure you support them!” She winked. “And even if you didn’t,
still do it.” The audience laughed along with her. “Until next time Glatso!”
she yelled before heading backstage.
